Abelisauroidea

Abelisauroidea

Abelisauroidea is a clade of ceratosaur theropods encompassing the abelisaurids and their close relatives. Originating in the Middle Jurassic, abelisauroids became the dominant large carnivores of Gondwana throughout the Cretaceous. Their evolutionary success on southern continents contrasts with the tyrannosaur dominance in Laurasia.
