† Ceramornis major was a large ornithurine bird from the Late Cretaceous Lance Formation of Wyoming, United States. Among the largest Cretaceous birds known from North America, this carnivorous bird was likely a capable flier that inhabited coastal or wetland environments. Known from fragmentary material, its systematic position within Ornithurae is debated. Its large size relative to most Cretaceous birds suggests it occupied an apex avian predator or large piscivore role in latest Cretaceous North American ecosystems.
Diet & Feeding
Ceramornis major was a meat-eating predator. Carnivorous dinosaurs were active hunters or scavengers, equipped with sharp teeth and claws for catching and consuming prey. They occupied the top of the food chain in their ecosystems.
Time Period
Ceramornis major lived during the Cretaceous Late period of the Mesozoic Era, approximately 100.5 to 66.0 million years ago.
The final age of dinosaurs, featuring iconic species like Tyrannosaurus rex, Triceratops, and Velociraptor. Dinosaurs reached their peak diversity before the catastrophic asteroid impact at the Chicxulub crater ended the Mesozoic Era.
